The Terra Foundation for American Art is dedicated to fostering the exploration, understanding, and enjoyment of the visual arts of the United States.
To help advance this mission, the foundation is inviting applications for its Academic Workshop & Symposium Grants program. Through the program, grants of up to $25,000 will be awarded in support of in-person exchanges such as workshops, symposia, and colloquia that advance scholarship in the field of American art (circa 1500–1980).
Visual arts that are eligible for Academic Workshop and Symposium Grants include all visual art categories except architecture and commercial film/animation. The foundation favors programs that place objects and practices in an art historical perspective.
To be eligible, applicants must be institutions with United States 501(c)(3) status or the international equivalent. For consideration by the foundation, at least one-third of the program must focus on pre-1980 art of the United States and the award level may be commensurate with the degree of focus. The Terra Foundation prefers not to be the sole contributor to an event. No more than 15 percent of a Terra Foundation grant may be applied to indirect costs.
The foundation welcomes applications from international research groups. Such groups should involve two to four faculty members from two or more academic institutions, at least one of which must be located outside the United States. Groups should pursue specific research questions that will advance scholarship and meet in person two or more times.
Letters of Inquiry are due March 16. Upon review, selected applicants will be invited to submit a full proposal by June 15, 2021.
