The Russell Sage Foundation (RSF), in partnership with the Economic Mobility and Opportunity program at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF), seeks to advance innovative research on economic mobility and access to opportunity in the United States. The foundation is interested in research focused on structural barriers to economic mobility and how individuals, communities and state entities understand, navigate and challenge systemic inequalities.

This initiative aims to promote the career advancement of its grantees. It will support early-career scholars (anyone who is currently an Assistant Professor or Adjunct Assistant Professors, and Lecturers who received the Ph.D. after January 1, 2013) and promote diversity by prioritizing applications from scholars who are underrepresented in the social sciences. This includes racial, ethnic, gender, disciplinary, institutional, and geographic diversity.

RSF has long supported social science research focused on improving social and living conditions in the U.S. In response to the crises of 2020, it is also prioritizing research that seeks to improve our understanding of social movements seeking to combat systemic racism and racial and other social, political, and economic inequalities. RSF priorities do not include analyses of health outcomes or health behaviors or research on educational processes or curricular issues.
